Dorm Kitchen Supplies for College

Living in a dorm is often one of the first places college students have to think about buying kitchen supplies – but it’s good practice for that eventual first apartment. We’ve rounded up a list of the dorm kitchen essentials you need to make your dorm feel like home.

Some Needed Kitchen Essentials

Mini Fridge

Your dorm kitchen might only have the very basics: a sink, counter, and small stove. A mini-fridge will let you stash all your milk, juice, sodas, and other perishables. You might want to get an extra padlock to make sure no one else gets in on your good stuff.

Coffee Maker

If you can’t live without your morning cup of joe, a coffee maker is essential. In a pinch, if you need instant hot water for anything else – like tea, soup, or pasta – the coffee maker can work for that, too.

Storage Containers

If you’re the kind of person who likes cooking a lot, storage containers give you the flexibility to make multiple meals at once and then save them in the fridge or freezer for later. This is awesome for when it’s finals season and you’re studying hard, but want a home-cooked meal.

Microwave

If your kitchen doesn’t have one, you might want to consider buying one and either leaving it in the kitchen for everyone to use or keeping it in your room. Microwaves are one of the greatest miracles to happen to college dorm kitchens. Five seconds to perfect nachos? Yes, please.

There are definitely some other supplies that will be needed.

Padlock

Every dorm kitchen is different. Some have multiple cupboards for everyone who lives on that floor and one or two fridges. Others are smaller and only have one or two cupboards for everyone to share. If you’re in a situation where you have your own cupboard, a padlock is a must. You’ll want one of these so nobody steals your granola bars.

Cutlery

An essential that should be on your list of stuff for college. When you have a paper to write and it’s midnight, you’ll want to be able to make yourself a quick PB&J sandwich.

Plates and Bowls

Odds are you’ll be eating a lot of cereal during your first semester, and bowls will let you do that. It’ll help you feel more at home than eating dry cereal out of the box. As for plates, these kitchen supplies give you options for lunches or dinners in case you’re feeling like eating in your room before class or after practice.

Knives

This is a multi-purpose tool that should be in your arsenal of kitchen supplies. You can chop anything with it, from herbs to meat, not to mention that it will impress your roommates when you pull it out of your cupboard. A good chef’s knife shows you’re serious about your food. It is also a great investment to take with you when you move into your first place.

Frying Pan

Your list of dorm room needs should include a frying pan. Like a good chef knife, it’s multipurpose: stir fry, scrambled eggs, and more. Stir fry is one of the easiest and fastest meals to make, and it’s also one of the first things college students learn how to cook for themselves.

Spatula (Obviously)

Are you and your friends finished with a paper and in the mood to bake? A spatula will let you stir together your ingredients.
